CORE FORMULA
For standard polyethylene stretch film, the commonly used estimate is based on film width, nominal gauge, roll length and material density. This is useful for quote review, inventory planning and checking whether a roll label is reasonable.
EXAMPLE
18 x 80 x 1,500 = 2,160,000.
2,160,000 x 0.000002403 = approximately 5.19 lb of net film.
The core, carton and packaging are not part of net film weight, so confirm what the supplier label includes.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
For polyethylene stretch film, a practical estimate is width in inches multiplied by gauge multiplied by length in feet multiplied by 0.000002403. The result is approximate net film weight in pounds before core and packaging weight.
Use length in feet equals net film weight in pounds divided by width in inches, divided by gauge, divided by 0.000002403. Subtract core and packaging weight before using the formula when the roll weight is gross weight.
Roll weight can differ because of actual thickness tolerance, resin density, roll length, film width, core weight, packaging, pre-stretch level and whether the label states gross or net film weight.
