BINGOPLAS BUYER GUIDE

Hand vs. machine stretch film.

The better choice depends on how the load is wrapped, how repeatable the process must be and what operating resources are available. Use this guide to prepare an application-specific comparison.

QUICK SELECTION SIGNAL

Start with the wrapping process—not the roll label.

Hand film and machine film may both contain pallet loads, but their roll construction and application conditions are different. Do not substitute one for the other without confirming compatibility and testing the actual specification.

DISCUSS YOUR APPLICATION
H

Consider hand film when

Wrapping is manual, loads are handled at multiple locations, or equipment is not part of the process.

M

Consider machine film when

A compatible wrapper is available and a repeatable wrap cycle is needed at a defined station.

01

Do not choose on volume alone

Load stability, equipment, labor, facility layout and handling conditions can change the decision.

02

Validate on real loads

Compare candidates using the normal load, wrap pattern, handling route and acceptance criteria.

BUYER COMPARISON

Hand film and machine film at a glance.

This table describes common operating differences, not a guaranteed product recommendation. The exact film specification and machine compatibility must be confirmed for the application.

Decision pointHand stretch filmMachine stretch film
How it is appliedA person walks or rotates around the load and controls film tension and overlap.A pallet wrapper applies the film using programmed settings and a defined wrap cycle.
Operational fitUseful where wrapping volume is limited or variable, loads are dispersed, or a machine is not available.Often considered where loads move through a repeatable wrapping station and process consistency or throughput is important.
Process consistencyResults depend heavily on operator technique, walking path, pull force, overlap and training. The machine can repeat a programmed cycle, but film delivery, settings, maintenance and load placement still affect the result.
Roll and equipment fitConfirm roll width, length or weight, core, handle or dispenser fit and manageable roll weight.Confirm machine model, carriage type, prestretch system, roll dimensions, core, film break response and operating settings.
Best comparison metricFilm used, labor time, operator consistency and load condition after handling.Film used, cycle time, downtime, containment result and cost per successfully wrapped load.

Operational fit should be validated in a controlled trial. A nominally similar gauge does not guarantee equal puncture resistance, stretch behavior or holding force.

A PRACTICAL DECISION PROCESS

Compare the complete system.

01

Measure the current process

Record loads wrapped, labor time, film used, film breaks, rewraps, load failures and handling conditions over a representative period.

02

Confirm compatibility

Match roll dimensions and construction to the dispenser or machine. For equipment, include the model, carriage and current settings in the review.

03

Run an operating trial

Use normal loads and handling. Compare containment, punctures, film use, cycle or labor time and the condition of the load after movement.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hand and machine film questions.

Is machine stretch film always the lower-cost option?

No. Total cost depends on equipment, labor, film usage, throughput, downtime and the number of successfully contained loads. Compare cost per wrapped load using your normal process rather than roll price alone.

Can hand stretch film be used on a wrapping machine?

A roll should only be used in the application for which its construction and specification are intended. Confirm machine compatibility, roll dimensions, core, stretch characteristics and equipment settings with the film and equipment suppliers.

What information helps a supplier recommend hand or machine film?

Share the wrapping method, machine model if applicable, loads per shift, load dimensions and weight, sharp edges, current film label, current wrap pattern and the performance issue you want to improve.
